~History of Oklahoma City
Once known as the unassigned lands, in April of 1889 Oklahoma City was settled.  During the Oklahoma Land Run, over 10,000 settlers came to what is now Oklahoma City and created a tent city in one day.  The population had doubled by 1899 and soon became the permanent place for the capital.  Before World War II, the city became a popular stockyard location and a center for oil production after oil was discovered within the city.  Oklahoma City saw more growth after the war, the Interstate Highway System made easy access to the city by I-40, I-35 and I-44 converging in the city.  The Tinker Air Force Base development also helped increase the city’s population.

Many residents began moving to the nearby suburbs in the 1970s and 1980s, which made for a decline in the inner-city population.  The city passed the Metropolitan Area Projects, a huge redevelopment package, in 1993.  This was to rebuild the core of the city by adding a central library, fairgrounds and convention center, a new baseball park, civic center renovations, and the Bricktown entertainment district canal.   More recently the city has created the Core to Shore project, which will connect the shore of the Oklahoma River to the core of Oklahoma City.

~Education in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City schools are served by several different school districts, including the Oklahoma City Public Schools.  It is the second largest public school system in the state behind Tulsa Public Schools.  In addition to public schools, the city provides many more unique schools for its residents such as the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics for the most gifted science and math pupils, Classen School of Advanced Studies, Advanced Science and Technology Education Center and many charter schools.

Many of the schools have received the Blue Ribbon School Award, one of the highest awards given to schools and some were named the top schools to attend.  The district is starting the new MAPS for Kids program, which will relocate some of the schools around the city.  This program was approved by the voters for a one-cent sales tax; this will last for the term of seven years.  The expiration of this tax is December 2007.

Oklahoma City is home to many universities and colleges.  Oklahoma City University and the University of Oklahoma are the most popular in the area.  There are several medical universities to choose from.  The Oklahoma City area offers 14 different colleges and universities.
