The History of Moore~

The area of Moore was originally founded in 1889 during the famous Oklahoma land run.  Early settlers came to the area by wagon, horseback and train.  Some settlers came on foot.  Local historians believe the town was originally called "Verbeck", which was assigned by the railroad company.  Soon, the town was renamed after a railroad employee, Al Moore.  Moore was a brakeman or conductor for the railroad who live in one of the trains boxcars.  This made it difficult for Moore to receive his mail, so he painted his name on a board and hung it on the side of the boxcar.  The settlement was officially named Moore after a postmaster was appointed, and in 1893 the name was legalized after the town was incorporated.

The original layout of the town was very small so the town slumbered for more than seventy years.  It finally exploded in development and expansion that caught the nation's attention.  A little over 21.6 square miles of land was annexed in 1961, making Moore a city in 1962.  During the 1960s the city of Moore saw a major population growth of 950% by the 1970 census report with a population of 18,761.  The 1980 census report showed an 86% growth rate with a population of 35,063 and the 1990 census report showed a 15% growth rate with a population of 40,318.

A very important factor in Moore is its location, it offers easy access to the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City, making the city of Moore a convenient and attractive place to live.  The City is an Oklahoma Certified City.
