~Deer Creek History~
The history of Deer Creek dates back to the mid-1500s. The Wichita Indians occupied the land of what is now Deer Creek, southern Kansas and most of Oklahoma. The first contact with the Wichita Indians came when Ornate and Coronado, Spanish adventurers, led an expedition from New Mexico to Kansas. They encountered the Wichita Indians in a village called Quivira, while passing through. Records of these villages can be found today. They tell about hunting and farming people living in circular, grass houses.
On the site of Deer Creek, during the early 1700's, an agreement was made between the Wichita villagers and the French hunter of Louisiana. The agreement was for the Wichita villagers to supply horses and hunting partners in exchange for metal tools and guns. The agreement ended by 1758 when the Wichita moved farther south and established another village along the Red River. Many of the sites where the villages once stood can still be found today.
